Charles Barkley defends yelling and spanking as parenting tools on 'The Dan Patrick Show'

Charles Barkley, the Basketball Hall of Famer and TNT analyst for the NCAA Men's Division I basketball tournament, appeared on The Dan Patrick Show on March 29, 2024, to discuss the ongoing March Madness tournament.[1][2]

The conversation touched on the tournament bracket and speculation about fellow TNT analyst Kenny Smith, a University of North Carolina alumnus from 1984-1987, interviewing for the Tar Heels' head coaching vacancy.[1][2]

Barkley shifted to criticizing modern athletes, stating they are uncoachable because coaches "can't even yell at them anymore."[1][2]

He advocated for old-school parenting, saying, "People talking about you can’t yell at your kids. Yes, hell you can yell at your kids. You’ll whoop their a-- too."[1][2] Barkley, who played 16 NBA seasons primarily as a power forward for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets before his 2006 Hall of Fame induction, emphasized discipline while opposing child abuse.[3]

"I’m not going around telling people to beat their kids, but I think if you don’t spank your kids and discipline them, they turn into some of these brats that we got today," Barkley said. He argued children cannot be reasoned with and learn through physical correction.[1][2]

Dismissing potential criticism, Barkley added, "You can blast me on social media... I don’t care what you think. Y’all can kiss my big Black a--." He reiterated his commitment to speaking his mind regardless of reception.[1][2]
