The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired veteran quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick.
Dalton, 37, joined the Panthers ahead of the 2023 season and served mostly as a backup to Bryce Young, Carolina's No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.[1][2]
In 2024, Dalton started three games for first-year head coach Dave Canales after Young was benched following an 0-2 start, going 0-3 with 1,021 passing yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions.[3][4]
Dalton spent nine seasons as the starter with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2019, posting a 70-61-2 regular-season record (.534 winning percentage) and guiding the team to four consecutive playoff berths from 2011 to 2014, though they went 0-4 in those postseason games.[5][6]
The Bengals traded Dalton to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a seventh-round pick following the 2019 season after selecting Joe Burrow No. 1 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.[7]
Dalton signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears in 2021, where he started six games and went 0-6.[8] He then joined the New Orleans Saints on a two-year contract in 2022, starting four games with a 1-3 record.[9][10]
The addition gives the Eagles an experienced backup option behind starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. Tanner McKee, a sixth-round pick (No. 188 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Stanford, served as Hurts' primary backup during the 2023 season.[11][12]
The Eagles finished 11-6 in 2023 and lost at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC wild-card round.[13]
