Villanova coach Kevin Willard jokes about firing staff after first-round NCAA loss to Utah State

Villanova, seeded No. 8 in its region, lost to No. 9 Utah State 86-76 in a first-round game of the 2026 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament on Friday at Viejas Arena in San Diego.

During the game, Villanova head coach Kevin Willard told TNT sideline reporter Lauren Shehadi he planned to fire his staff after Utah State scored eight points on out-of-bounds plays near the basket. "I'm going to fire my staff," Willard said. Shehadi replied, "Not now." Willard repeated, "Yeah, I am," adding that the move was due to poor defense.

After the loss, Willard reiterated the need for staff changes in his postgame news conference, citing defensive lapses including a late three-pointer by Utah State. When asked about the remarks, Willard called them "a joke."

A reporter noted online criticism of the comments, to which Willard responded, "I don't care. Welcome to my life."

The loss drew mixed reactions on social media, with some users questioning Willard's tone and accountability.

Willard is in his first season at Villanova after three years at Maryland.[1] This appearance marked his eighth NCAA tournament as a head coach; he has never reached the Elite Eight.[1][2]

Viejas Arena, home of San Diego State University, has hosted multiple NCAA tournament games.[3]
